2023-04-16 — Burn Baby, Burn

Today has pretty much been a repeat of last Sunday. 🙃

I slept in a little bit, getting up at 8:30 or so because I didn’t get to bed until about 3:00.

Definitely not enough sleep. 🙃

I need to get more. I don’t function that well on low sleep. I do okay, but I’m much more likely to be impatient and easily frustrated and quick to anger if I’m short on sleep.

And being short on sleep seems to be an every day issue right now. I guess one benefit of having a pretty simple day today is that this post won’t be very long, which means I’ll get to bed fairly quickly.

I went back down to the woods today, and I spent most of the day clearing out vines and dead trees and dead wood on the ground, putting it all in a burn pile and burning it right there on the edge of the woods and the road.

I made really good progress today.

The woods look so much different than they did just a couple weeks ago. It used to be tickets of bushes and masses of vines just suffocating nearly everything it seemed like. But now, I’ve cleared out the vines and probably a quarter acre of the forest? I’m just throwing a number out there. I really have no idea how much I’ve done. It’s a lot, whatever it is.

In that section, the vines are all cut and pulled up, the dead trees are all cut out, and the forest is able to do a little bit of breathing.

🥳

I’m surprised they gave me a burn permit for today. I probably shouldn’t have used it even though I was permitted to, as the wind was super strong. But I tended to fire as best I could, and gratefully, I was able to keep everything safe just being vigilant and watching.

Part of the forest was so thick with vines that the ground was absolutely covered in pieces of dead vine and dead tree. In some places, I think the rotting branches and vines were maybe 10 in deep. 😶

But it’s mostly all cleaned out now!

At least in that little quarter ish acre section. 🙃

Definitely ran into a heck of a lot more poison ivy today. There’s poison ivy all over in that section of woods. Hopefully, I didn’t get hammered with it today. But I wouldn’t be surprised if I have a good bit more in the rash department. I also got my first actual tick bite today. I had one that just barely started hooking on, but I got it off me and killed before it actually had latched on, but unfortunately, I had another one on the back of my left knee that had actually latched on. Hadn’t fully latched on, but it latched on enough that it was starting to itch.

Tick bites itch for so long on me! I can have tick bites it’s for months and months.

That’s not so fun. 🙃

But as I’m sure I’ve probably mentioned before, though I don’t like ticks and chiggers, and I wish we were free of them here, at the same time, I don’t really worry about them anywhere near as much as I used to. I just sort of go about my business, And I try and stay vigilant to make sure any tics that start crawling on me can never reproduce.

My mom came down and tended the fire at one point so that I could go up and help Jim and Jordan re set the tarp over the garden in the upper field.

Then it was back down to carry buckets of water from the creek to douse the fire at least enough so that it wasn’t a danger well I went up to the family meeting for the month.

It was a mild danger to me today, as I got more burns today than I’ve ever gotten I think with my burn piles here on the hill. But whatever, nothing too bad.

Love those family meetings. Love that there’s that togetherness and planning for the future and helping each other. Good stuff!

I’ll miss the hill when it’s time for me to go…

After the meeting, it was back down to the woods where I did a little bit more work in the woods, burned a few more things, but mostly just let it all die down.

Mama made vegan pancakes for dinner. Good stuff.

And here we are. It’s 11:19. I’ve got a massively busy day scheduled for tomorrow, as it was already going to be a very busy day, but three cars from Saturday caught pushed over until today, so it’s going to be one heck of a busy day. 🙃

So many things on my schedule. So many people I’m trying to help, both with cars, as well as lots of stuff going on here on the hill. Lots of family members in need right now. So I’ve got lots to do. 🙃

The manifold gauge set capable of handling home AC refrigerant came in the mail yesterday, I think, and I ordered a 25 lb canister of R410A refrigerant today. The only other thing that I need, I hope, is just the proper oil to put back in the system as I evacuate and then recharge my nephews AC system in his house–after I fix the leak, anyway.

Then we’ll figure out the other AC system as well and see what we need to do to fix that.

I also have my Hill Brothers car to fix so that it’s available for my niece in law to use. That’ll be pro bono.

And the AC works for my Hill nephew, I’ll probably just charge him my cost to do the work for him. So kind of pro bono, kind of not because it’ll probably pay for the equipment and refrigerant and whatnot. But it’ll still probably save him $2,500 or so over the estimate he was given.

I also am going to buy a couple of cars from one of my customers, one car for one of my other customers, the old lady, and one car has a backup car for people on the hill who need a car to drive when their cars go south.

Anyway, super busy, and that’s not even the half of it. 🙃

Liz’s leaf blower needs to be fixed, so that’s on my schedule to do, and I’ve made a mess of the driveway again, so I’ve got to do that, and on and on and on and on and on and on.

😅

But… 😴

Good night, my lovelies. 🥰

Love and hugs. 😊
