2022-09-08 — Tranny Bath

Holar 😊

I’m a tired one. Only three jobs today, all of them done by me, as Malaki was taking today and tomorrow off, but I’m still tired.

First job was up in Bella Vista area on the side of the freeway. I didn’t realize it was on the side of the freeway. Generally, we don’t do those, but I didn’t check the pin he sent me before I said yes to the job, so… oops.

He had a tranny line blow, dumping fluid all over the freeway. Fortunately, for him, he saw smoke before it burned up his torque converter and tranny, and also fortunately for him, it didn’t cause a fire (tranny fluid is much more flammable than engine oil, so if you get a squirt on a hot exhaust manifold, it can catch fire super easily).

Took a long time to get the job done, as the “quick connects” were a nightmare to get undone. It probably took close to an hour just to undo four line connections. Then I had to unbolt the cross shock and the sway bar and a few other connections, and I was able to snake the long double line (metal) out.

Then it took probably 30 minutes to get it properly filled (tranny fluid can be a pain in the but to check, and even more of a pain in the butt, when you have lost a whole bunch of fluid but don’t know how much you’ve lost. So I started by putting two quarts in, getting the engine up to operating temp, checking again, adding a bit, checking again, adding a bit, checking again, adding a bit, etc.

Each time you check it, you run it through all the gears for three seconds each gear, and then you let it idle for a little bit, then you check the dipstick.

Tranny dipsticks are so annoying.

Anyway, so it took over three hours to get all that done on the side of the freeway, but it got done, gratefully, with me completely covered in tranny fluid.

Next car was a 2007 Land Rover Range Rover Sport that was overheating. Took a while to find the leak. Had to get the car up to full operating temperature, but I found it–the water inlet is leaking at one of the gasket junctions. Gonna do that job on Saturday.

Came home, ate some food. Tried one of the watermelons from the garden. Sadly, it wasn’t sweet at all. Didn’t really have much of any flavor, but… it was home grown. 🙃

Then I went back to work on my hill brother’s Sentra.

😶

Oh, Nissan, why must thou be this way?

I spent like 5 hours working on it tonight, trying to get the engine dropped low enough to get the last bracket bolt out, and then dealing with damaged threads, stripped bolts, misaligned mounts, and on and on and on.

Ugh. Nissans.

After I finally got it all back together, I went to take replace the shocks in the rear, but the first shock bolt was seized on like the motor mount bolt, and I just threw up the white flag. It’s probably going to have to be cut off the car, so instead of risking having a car stuck apart when he needed to use it, I just threw up the white flag and said, let’s do this when we have more time to play with.

So… the Nissan is done.

For now.

Dinner. And now bed.

  1. I’m grateful that I had the right quick disconnect tool this morning. I had to file it down to get it to work in the specific application, but it worked–eventually.
  2. I’m grateful that I was able to find the coolant leak in the Land Rover. It was a little deceptive. The leak was running down the transmission right by the firewall, but the leak itself turned out to be in the front of the motor. It was just running underneath the intake manifold down the entire length of the engine, and down the tranny.
  3. I’m grateful that the Nissan is off my schedule–for now.
  4. I’m grateful for orange juice. 😊
  5. I’m grateful for the dinner my mom made. Nice to have dinner after a long day.

Gave Malaki a price for selling my business. Haven’t heard back from him about it. Guess we’ll see what happens. Maybe I’ll sell it before I go on my trip? That would be… really cool, honestly. It would make for an even more wonderful trip.

Maybe I’d just stay there. 🙃

In the meantime, gonna be a crazy busy day tomorrow.

Love and hugs.
